Some Resources and an Idea

In Sunday's sermon, we gave consideration to the ministry of exhortation and how it relates to a culture of discipleship within the church. We noted that in this ministry, the focus of our exhortation must be the character of God. Only God's character is deep enough and powerful enough to sustain our faith througout the entirety of the Christian life. Therefore, we must exhort and encourage one another with the truths of God's character.

To that end, here are some further resources on the attributes of God. Consider picking up one of these books and studying God's character for the good of others. Remember, an increasing knowledge of God gives us a deep reservoir from which we can minister to others.

The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer. This short book is a helpful introduction to God's attributes, as well as the way in which they apply to the Christian life.

Knowing God by J.I. Packer. This book is a modern classic, a must-read for Christians who desire to better understand who God is.

None Like Him by Jennifer Wilkin. This new book looks at God's attributes and then helpfully reminds us how these attributes distinguish him from us.

And finally, The Attributes of God by A.W. Pink. This one is not for the faint of heart, but the effort will be well rewarded!

Now, here's the idea. Pick out one of the above titles, and ask a brother or sister to read through it with you. Maybe once a week, every other week, or once a month. The frequency can fit your schedule, but the important point is doing this together - with another believer. Not only will you both benefit from the study, but you will help build a culture of discipleship in our church.

So, by God's grace, let's take up and read, together.
